Province set for ownership of new interchange

WESTBANK, B.C. — The new Campbell Road Interchange on Highway 97 in B.C. has been completed on time and on budget, and will soon be turned over to the province.

The project was managed by the Westbank First Nation. The interchange, located at the western end of the soon-to-be completed William R. Bennett Bridge, will officially be turned over to the province this summer.

“I can’t overstate the historic significance of the Westbank First Nation overseeing a project of this magnitude,” said Transport Minister Kevin Falcon. “This is the first time a First Nation in British Columbia has undertaken delivery of a large design-build project and it won’t be the last.”

The new interchange will improve traffic flow and safety for area residents, while providing better access on and off the new bridge. A pedestrian pathway is an important design feature of the project, which cost $12.97 million.

Recognition of Westbank First Nation’s involvement in the project is evidenced in the Okanagan-themed graphics and artwork incorporated into retaining walls and roundabouts.

“This interchange really demonstrates how governments can work with First Nations as partners to deliver projects that everyone can benefit from,” said Westbank First Nation Chief Robert Louie. “By being involved, right from the pre-design phase and in every step along the way, Westbank First Nation has ensured good access to reserve lands, resolved some cultural and archaeological concerns and set the stage for future partnerships.”

The William R. Bennett Bridge itself will be the centre of attention May 25 when the province officially opens the new Okanagan Lake crossing.
