The Professional Truck Training Alliance of Canada (PTTAC) and the Saskatchewan Trucking Association (STA) have held a virtual meeting with Randy Hoback, Member of Parliament for Prince Albert, Sask., to discuss the inclusion of commercial truck driver training under the Canada Student Financial Assistance Program (CSFAP).

The federal program provides grants and loans to full- and part-time students in post-secondary programs. Currently, truck driver training programs do not qualify for CSFAP funding.

PTTAC and STA said they plan to address this barrier and continue working with Hoback and other federal representatives to advance funding accessibility and support the inclusion of truck driver training under the CSFAP.

Since its formation in December 2023, PTTAC’s advocacy has focused on establishing commercial truck driving as a recognized Red Seal trade in Canada, developing nationally approved truck training instructor programs, removing barriers to funding and tuition support, and ensuring standardization and compliance for training schools at both provincial and national levels.

  • Until truck drivers are a skilled trades like other and changes to a min hourly rate of $28hr after 2 yr or 4500 hrs experience based of the log or payroll with medical benefits for cross border truck drivers why should the taxpayers $ pay for training or bring in foreign workers to the transport industry? Also overtime after 10 hrs a day and 40 hrs per week
How can we justify training more people with a surplus of 30 000 drivers from January to March and a surplus of 20 000 from April to Nov. Proof is low freight often below $2.80 cd per mile or $60 hr or less for local lease ops and some foreign truck drivers getting $26 hr to a Gst account or $21.00 hr while other companies are paying$31 hr to $37 hr plus overtime after 10 hrs per day and have a surplus of good drivers
