Quebec to accelerate speed limiter legislation
QUEBEC CITY — Quebec’s transport minister says her department plans to fast-track a controversial bill that includes mandating speed limiters on all trucks entering the province after a three-year-old girl was run down and killed this past Halloween.
The small child was hit by a speeding car, prompting calls within the province to expedite the legislation, which includes capping truck speed at 105 km/h.
Quebec Transportation Minister Julie Boulet says she will table the legislation this week, which is ahead of schedule. The proposal will have to pass readings in the legislature and be voted on.
The proposal involves a six-point safety plan, which includes tougher penalties for speeding; drinking and driving; speed limiters on trucks, photo radar and red-light cameras; and a ban on hand-held cell phones.
Last week, incoming Ontario Transportation Minister Jim Bradley confirmed to TodaysTrucking.com that he will pursue speed limiter legislation in that province as well.
