RIVERVIEW, N.B. — Deteriorating roadside banks are creating and unsafe highway conditions between here and Hopewell Cape.

The Department of Transportation is taking measures to fix up Hwy. 114 and keep truckers and motorists safe.

Citizens say they’re worried as banks erode and crumble a total collapse may occur. Guardrails surrounding the area have already come loose for lack of footings, and worry exists regarding heavy vehicles sliding on icy roads this winter may cause the road to cave in.

Tracy Burkhardt, spokesperson for the department, says staff will investigate it immediately and implement a short-term solution to secure the railings, and prevent the 100-foot drop to the Petitcodiac River.

For the long-term, she says, the department will take soil samples before snow falls to determine what makes up the ground beneath the roadway.
