Safety man collects 2006 MVSA transportation award

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – Randy Badiuk, manager of safety and compliance at Harold Marcus Tank Truck Service in Bothwell, Ont. is the winner of the 2007 Motor Vehicle Safety Association (MVSA) Safety to Motor Transportation Award.

Badiuk was honored at the annual MVSA banquet held in Mississauga. He has been with Harold Marcus since 1986, and can be credited with, among other achievements, lowering the company’s driver turnover rate from an already-enviable 30 percent to a rare eight percent.

Baduik became a Certified Director of Safety (CDS) through the North American Transportation Management Institute (NATMI) of the University of Central Florida in 2001, and he regularly conducts safety outreach programs with community and environmental groups, and has conducted Dangerous Goods awareness training with the Ontario Provincial Police and other enforcement agencies.

Harold Marcus is a specialized chemical and waste transporter operating 230 trailers and 130 power units in the U.S. and Canada. The company is based in Bothwell, Ont., near London, and has terminals in Sarnia, Ont. and Montreal.

Badiuk credits the company for his professional success, saying owner Dennis Marcus is one of those bosses who is always there, but not always obvious.

“Dennis is more than willing to give me everything I need to do my job, and he’s willing to let me do it my way, but I’m a bit like a dog on leash — I say this with utmost respect,” he says. “Dennis will let me go, but if he sees me getting too close to trouble or into something I can handle, he gently reigns me in. I’ve learned a lot about my personal limits, and I’ve grown professionally because Dennis saw to it that I took the right steps in getting where I am today.

“I’m most grateful to Harold and Dennis for providing the incredible work environment in which to practice his profession,” he says. “It’s the greatest thing an employee can have.”
