Truck crossings plummet across twin Saults
SAULT STE. MARIE — Northern Ontario’s International Bridge experienced the worst monthly drop in commercial traffic in the crossing’s nearly 50 years of operation.
According to The Sault Star, transport numbers slumped a whopping 33.8 percent last month compared to April 2007.
Commercial trucks that crossed between Sault Ste. Marie and the American twin city of the same name dropped to 7,355 in April from the 11,107cross-border haulings the year before.
And things aren’t exactly looking up. "I don’t see anything that shows a turnaround," said Phil Becker of the Joint International Bridge Authority.
April marked the eighth consecutive month of negative commercial traffic on the 47-year-old bridge, reports the Star.
Overall toll revenue is also down with $878,862 collected compared to $1,210,449 budgeted.
