Security training not needed for port pass drivers: BCTA

LANGLEY, B.C. (May 25, 2005) — The British Columbia Trucking Association says it thinks it has been able to convince the Vancouver Port Authority that security training of seaport truck drivers will be unnecessary.

The original proposal consisted of 30 to 45 minutes of on-line training plus a test for truck drivers who require port passes, BCTA says. The VPA also considered making drivers undergo classroom training and be administered a test.

The new proposal BCTA hopes will be adopted consists of providing drivers with a brochure that explains the various security levels and the restrictions that will be imposed if a higher level of security is required.

Copies of the brochure have been sent to BCTA members that provide intermodal services. An electronic copy of the brochure is available to all members. Contact Louise Yako at the BCTA Office for a copy.
