SPECIAL: Are we headed for another pre-buy in 2007?
In late 2002 Canadian fleets and owner/operators seeking to avoid new U.S. EPA emissions regulations rushed to buy equipment before the regulations went into effect.
About 20% of Canadian fleets and almost 10% of owner/operators participated in this pre-buy, according to the Buying Trends research conducted by Motortruck and Truck News last year. Engine makers had to run plants around the clock to meet the surge in demand, and then had to lay off many of their workers once the new standards came into force and truck buyers stopped their purchases. It made for a difficult way to run their business and it’s something engine manufacturers are loathe to repeat.
But are we headed for another pre-buy in 2007?
That’s one of the crucial questions to be answered with this year’s annual Buying Trends Survey currently being conducted by Motortruck and Truck News with the support of more than a dozen major industry suppliers. The survey asks respondents how they structured their purchasing strategies to address the new emissions regulations in 2002 and if they would consider adopting the strategy for the 2007 emissions standards deadline. The result should provide a strong indication of whether there will be another pre-buy.
These is just one of the critical questions to be answered by the annual Buying Trends Survey this year. The survey also examines the performance of the new engines, the impact of the new hours of service regulations on truck buying plans, and details the brand preferences for a variety of equipment purchases.
Want to see the results? All respondents to our survey, which just takes a few minutes to complete, will be e-mailed a copy of the survey highlights free of charge.
Also, all who complete the survey will be entered into a draw for a $1,000 CASH PRIZE. And, the first 25 owner/operators to answer the survey will be sent a free copy of the Owner/Operator Business Skills CD from the Canadian Trucking Human Resources Council.
The Buying Trends 2004 Survey link below will take you to the survey site. Easy-to-follow instructions are included there. The survey is also available through the Survey button on the upper right hand side on our web site.
