Street racers to face trial in trucker’s death

BARRIE, Ont. — Two more young men charged with the street racing death of an Innisfil truck driver will face trial.

According to the Barrie Examiner, a judge in a preliminary hearing yesterday ruled there is enough evidence against Prabhjit Multani, 20, of Etobicoke, and Ravi Badhwar, 21, of Mississauga to proceed with a trial.

Last year, trucker David Virgoe of Wilburn Archer Trucking was heading northbound on Ontario’s Highway 400 with an empty bulk tanker behind him.

He lost control of his tanker after being cut off by three speeding cars racing on the highway. Virgoe was able to steer away from the center guardrail and avoid oncoming southbound traffic before crashing into a ditch. He died. But police say his heroic actions saved lives.

Another man, Nauman Nusrat, 20, of Etobicoke, pleaded guilty last month. He was sentenced to two years of house arrest on top of the 11 months he has served in jail since his arrest. He also received a lifetime driving prohibition and $1,250 in fines.

The Crown has filed an appeal of that sentence, reports the Examiner.

Ontario Trucking Association President David Bradley said at the time that the punishment was slap on the wrist.
