Super Bowl not so super for border traffic

WINDSOR, Ont. — The Ontario Trucking Association is warning truckers to prepare for longer than usual border crossing times due to increased security for Super Bowl XL in Detroit.

While kick-off is Sunday night at 6:30, U.S. Customs Border Protection, Michigan State Police, and other law enforcement agencies are expected to step up their vigilance in the next few days of incoming trucks to the Detroit Region.

The Michigan State Police advise carriers to take extra care with security surrounding transport trucks heading for the Detroit area this week. It has been strongly recommended by authorities that carriers should avoid using the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel on Saturday February 4th and Sunday February 5th.

Below are some available details concerning Tunnel Traffic:

Friday, Feb 3: Minor Windsor bound delays anticipated after 5:00 pm

Saturday, Feb 4 and Sunday Feb. 5: No expected delays before noon; Listen to local traffic reports for the remainder of the day; traffic on Goyeau Street may be redirected. It is suggested that non-downtown/non-event traffic use the bridge. Cross border trucks should not use the tunnel.

Drivers are encouraged to stay abreast of traffic situations by listening to the following radio stations during Super Bowl days:

96.7 FM; 800 AM; 760 AM; 950 AM; XM Radio 216; Sirius Radio 155
