Survey indicates fleets not yet ready to open wallets

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A US-based survey of fleet buying intentions indicates fleet owners will be keeping their wallets locked up in the first quarter of 2010.

The Q1 Fleet Sentiment Equipment Buying Index, compiled by CK Commercial Vehicle Research, suggests fleets aren’t yet ready to buy new equipment. Only 28% of respondents to the survey said they’ll be placing orders for new power units and 25% said they’ll be ordering new trailers in the first quarter.

The index fell 21% from the fourth quarter of 2009, when fleets may have been in the mood to buy in order to beat the costly EPA2010 emissions requirements.

The index is based on survey responses from 60 fleets operating more than 110,000 medium- and heavy-duty trucks.
