taking the Book out of Driver Logs

When it comes to hours of service, PeopleNet Communications says it can take the paper out of paperwork.

The wireless communications company has rolled out eDriver Logs, an electronic record of a driver’s duty status that fleet managers, dispatchers, drivers, or enforcement officers can review in real time or at any point over a one-year history during a compliance audit.

A driver logs his duty status into a PeopleNet on-board computer or Palm handheld device. That data is available instantly from inside the cab, either for the driver or an inspector to view. Yet using PeopleNet’s wireless communications system, the record can also be monitored at a password-protected web page: if you’re a fleet manager or a dispatcher, you can see how many hours a driver has available for the next day so you can avoid dispatching him into non-compliance. And should the driver approach the end of his allowable on-duty hours, you can program the system to automatically send an alert to the driver, dispatcher, and/or safety manager.

PeopleNet says eDriver Logs meets regulatory requirements in the United States and Canada. Records are accessible through PeopleNet’s web-based interface for as long as it is required by U.S. or Canadian regulations, either six or 12 months. An added benefit: since the log is already in electronic form, you don’t have to manually enter data or scan documents, reducing administrative time.
