Teamsters Ask Windsor Dump Truck Drivers to Join
WINDSOR — Remember when Windsor-area dump truck drivers staged a protest over low wages?
Well, it looks like Teamsters Local 879 would like the drivers to join the union, reported The Windsor Star and CBC.ca.
Amico Infrastructure, the subcontractor on the parkway project, has been accused of not paying owner-operators and drivers the going rate ($75 to $80 in the Hamilton, Toronto, London area versus the $63 an hour (now $65) the dump haulers were getting).
A union organizer said that they already represent other heavy construction operators and dump truck drivers in the Windsor area, and would like to go to bat for the Amico hires, scoring them a collective agreement.
But the drivers aren’t biting, reported The Windsor Star.
“I don’t think anyone wants a union,” said one unnamed driver to the newspaper. “We got more power than they do.”
