The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security said it is notifying about 8,800 commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders that they must provide proof of citizenship or lawful presence in the United States to ensure compliance with federal licensing requirements.

These drivers must present a U.S. passport, a certified birth certificate, a certificate of naturalization, or another approved document.

“This action is designed to ensure that all CDL records meet today’s state and federal requirements and are in line with the Presidential directive. Drivers whose files predate modern documentation rules will receive instructions on how to complete their records,” said Russell Shoup, assistant commissioner of the state’s Driver Services Division.

CDL holders who receive a notice but fail to provide the required documents by April 6 will be downgraded to a non-commercial driver’s license until proof is provided.

Tennessee has about 150,000 CDL holders, and state officials said only those who need to update their information will receive a notice.
