Thieves targeting metal loads: OPP

TORONTO, (April 8, 2005) — Cargo thieves have apparently began targeting loads of metal in the Toronto area, Peel Regional Police warn.

The police have contacted the Ontario Trucking Association about notifying carriers hauling metal and related products to be more vigilant about protecting cargo.

Peel Region’s Commercial Auto Crime Unit has been kept additionally busy in recent weeks dealing with thieves who are finding loads of metal to be an easy mark because it is virtually impossible to identify the product’s original owner once stolen, the OTA says. Some of the thefts have been linked to shipments sitting in unsecured areas awaiting transport.

The OTA is encouraging carriers to obtain a copy of its booklet of helpful tips “Best Practices to Prevent Theft”. Contact OTA’s Communications department (416) 249-7401 Ext. 224 or download a free copy by following this link and selecting “Crime Prevention” from list of publication choices displayed: http://www.ontruck.org/news/publications/
