TMC: Webb expands product sizes

TAMPA, Fla. — Webb Wheel Products is expanding the available sizes of its Vortex Brake Drums, preparing for the tighter stopping distances imposed on commercial vehicles beginning in 2011.

The products will help to control the added weights as fleets move to larger friction materials, says Ken Kelley, vice-president, Webb Wheel Products. “This is an economic solution to meet the 2011 stopping distances.”

While lighter than standard drums, the Vortex is still made from the same grey iron, but they are designed to run cooler because of thinner walls, a centerline “squealer” band, and external ribs.

The 16.5×5 versions will weigh in at 79 lbs, compared to a traditional 97 lbs.

“Cooler brakes equate to longer life, not just of the drum but also the brake lining. It’s cooler running and lower pressure and lower stress on the system,” he said.
