Top Ontario truck pilots crowned
WINDSOR, Ont. — The most skilled truck drivers in Ontario put their talents to the test last weekend in Windsor, Ont., looking for a spot at the National Truck Driving Championships in Regina, Sask. later this fall.
Wayne Burnett of Rothsay Maple Leaf Foods was crowned Grand Champion at this year’s Ontario Truck Driving Championships.
Other notable achievements include;
Joe Nagy of Reimer Express Lines, who was named Rookie of the Year; Bert Weykamp, also of Reimer, won the MTO Safety Award; Ron Hughes of Con-way Freight Canada had the Highest-Points total; and Humber Transportation’s Rob Jackson was given the Bill Russell Memorial Award for contributions to Truck Driving Championships.
As well, Adam Brewster, Wayne Burnett, Mike Goodyear, Bert Weykamp, and Bryon Winfield all scored a prefect pre-trip.
Competition category winners are as follows:
StepVan: Wayne Wedow of Purolator Courier
Straight Truck: Joe Kuntz, Koch Transport
Single Single: Ron Hughes, Con-way Freight
Single Tandem: Mike Goodyear, Maple Leaf Consumer Foods
Tandem Tandem: Jeff MacLean, SLH Transport Inc.
Train: Wayne Burnett, Rothsay Maple Leaf Foods
Winners will go on to compete against other top drivers from around the country at the National Truck Driving Championships in Regina from Sept. 13-16
The Ontario championships are organized by the Transportation Health and Safety Association of Ontario.
