Tories committed to DRIC after cabinet shuffle

OTTAWA – This week’s cabinet shuffle will not hamper plans to build a new bridge at the Windsor-Detroit gateway, a federal official told the Windsor Star.

According to the newspaper, the Conservative government remains committed to building a public-private bridge.

Quebec MP Denis Lebel (C-Roberval-Lac-Saint-Jean) took over for Chuck Strahl as Canada’s new transportation minister.

Lebel was also junior minister for the Economic Development Agency of Canada.

An official said that with the government having a majority, the budget—which includes a passage to "advance the construction of a new international bridge in the Windsor-Detroit trade corridor" – will likely pass with that language intact.

Under former minister John Baird, Canada offered Michigan $550 million to cover its share of the costs for the bridge project in exchange for political approval.

The Michigan Legislature is expected to review a new bill to support the project within a month.

According to the Star, Baird — who has been appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs – is rumored to still be active on the bridge file.
