Toronto Trucking Could Get Even More Frustrating

TORONTO-If trucking through parts of Toronto gets you frustrated–especially the Gardiner or Don Valley Parking Lot– then stop reading this story, because conditions are only going to be slower and possibly more expensive.

City officials are exploring the idea of collecting tolls on the Gardiner and DVP. The money would be used to pay for road maintenance, with any left over going to transit.

Fees for trucks would range from $2.50 to $6.50 per trip, according to media sources.

While not a done deal, Toronto’s transportation general manager has advised Mayor John Tory the matter needs to be carefully researched before going forward.

In June the city approved a plan to rebuild part of DVP costing billions of dollars and said it would look into possible tolls.

If tolls are to be put in place it would need approval from the Ontario government.

The Gardiner now carries, on average, a total of 228,000 vehicles east of Highway 427 while some 110,000 drivers use the DVP north of the Bayview Ave./Bloor St. interchange each weekday.

In the meantime, expect to see traffic movements in some Toronto neighborhoods come to an even slower crawl, if that’s possible, starting this week.

The reason is speed limits will drop from 40 km/h to 30 km/h. In other words, you might as well walk.

The move follows recommendations from the city’s Medical Officer of Health. For more, click here:  http://www.newstalk1010.com/news/2015/09/14/lower-speed-limits-being-posted-in-some-toronto-neighbourhoods
