Trailer Orders Jump in April, Still 10% Down This Year

COLUMBUS, IN — Net trailer orders in April are up 29 percent month-over-month reports ACT Research, and that’s not a late April fool’s joke.

The results come after a weak March and are stronger than what was expected for this time of year.

“The order activity seen in April is normally expected in March; the commitment delay is an indication of the overarching caution regarding investment commitments by the fleets,” says Frank Maly, director-CV Transportation with ACT Research.

However, in comparison to 2012, orders trail by 10 percent year-to-date.

Why is this happening? Maly has some answers. “Concerns over a sluggish economy, lackluster fleet profitability, and credit availability have been the major factors impacting trailer order timing the past few months,” he says.

“Additionally, the pullback in energy investment has specifically impeded the specialty trailer segment.”
