Trailer orders show signs of life in second quarter

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Could it be that trailer-makers are finally in for some good news?

According to the latest figures from ACT Research, May commercial trailer orders suggest the trailer market may be coming off the bottom. In its report State of the Industry: US Trailers, ACT reported that although May net orders were still down 37% from last year, second quarter orders with one month remaining have already surpassed the total net orders posted in each of the previous two quarters.

“Order improvement and an increasing backlog from continued low production levels are both positives,” said Gayatri Deshpande, research analyst with ACT Research. “However, there are still significant headwinds in the economy and the industry that will challenge new demand for the remainder of 2009.”
