TransCore index shows loads, capacity spike in mid-January

PORTLAND, Ore. — TransCore announced it noticed an interesting trend for the week ending Jan. 15, with a surge in both truck loads and capacity on the spot market in a traditionally soft time of year.

TransCore wonders if severe weather and the holidays were to thank for the increase, noted in its TransCore Trendlines weekly barometer report on spot market freight.

Truck loads rose 31% over the previous week while truck postings jumped 26%.

Flatbed loads were especially strong, up 40% over the previous week. Flatbed rates were also up 2.6% (four cents) on the spot market compared to mid-December rates.

The sudden spike followed two straight weeks of post-holiday declines in truck loads, which is not unusual for the time of year, TransCore notes.
