TransForce strengthens western hold with Porter Trucking buy
MONTREAL, (Jan. 25, 2005) — Canada’s largest trucking company has acquired yet another major fleet.
TransForce Income Fund announced that it has signed a letter of intent to acquire Porter Trucking in Calgary, Alta. The agreement is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close on February 15, 2005.
Porter Trucking is a LTL and truckload carrier servicing all western Canadian centers with 10 terminals. It has about 550 trucks and trailers, generating $33 million in revenue a year.
“Porter Trucking has been a long-standing partner of our TST Overland Express Division, providing TST with seamless service throughout western Canada,” said Alain Bédard, president and CEO of TransForce. “Its addition will strengthen the relationship between Porter and TST and expand our presence in Western Canada.”
Bedard added that Porter Trucking will support TST in the ExpressLink partnership, the North American network that serves the 50 American states and 10 Canadian
Provinces.
Porter should also compliment TransForce’s 2003 acquisition of Calgary-based Canadian Freightways — which provided the Montreal trucking giant its first major footprint in the West.
TransForce has completed half a dozen major acquisitions since 2000. Other recent TransForce buys that once made Today’s Trucking’s Top 100 For-Hire Carrier list include: Consolidated Freightways; Boucherville, Que.-based Transpel; Toronto parcel delivery firm Canpar; and in October 2004, Highland Transport, which added another 2,000 tractors and trailers to TransForce’s fleet of 7,500.
Keeping consistent with TransForce’s strategy of adding well-managed companies, Porter has strong leadership under President Michael Kits who will continue to manage the company following the acquisition.
Kits will report to Gary King, president of TST Solutions L.P.
