TransLink may put the brakes to fast speeds on the Pattullo Bridge

VANCOUVER — TransLink is looking to slow down vehicles on the Pattullo Bridge after a series of recent fatal collisions on the span, the Globe & Mail reports.

Earlier this week, a man was killed after his motorcycle spun out of control. Witnesses told police they saw him weaving in out of traffic at high speeds before the crash.

The death was the sixth on the 69-year-old bridge since January. Since 1990, 19 people have died in crashes associated with the bridge, which links Surrey to New Westminster.

TransLink — the agency responsible for the Lower Mainland’s road and bridge network, has spent $20-million on safety improvements on the bridge.

In addition to slower speeds, TransLink board members agreed in May to restrict buses and large trucks to the outside lanes and to review the idea of reducing the bridge to three lanes from four.

Both options are currently in the planning stage.
