Truck order dip blamed on seasonal trends

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Orders for heavy-duty trucks in July receded from June’s numbers, but the numbers are still well above last years.

According to ACT Research, there were net orders of 11,667 class 8 commercial vehicles, which was a 27 percent drop from June. However, the order from July 2010 were still 27 percent better than the orders from July 2009.

In the research company’s latest release of the “State of the Industry: Classes 5-8 Vehicles,” ACT reported net orders of medium-duty classes 5-7 equipment rose both month-to-month and year-over-year. Compared to July 2009 medium-duty net orders were up 100 percent.

“Normal seasonality accounted for about a third of the month-to-month decline in class 8 net orders,” said Kenny Vieth, partner and senior analyst with ACT. “The momentum in class 8 demand is still increasing as trucking company profitability continues to rebound strongly.”
