Trucker Becomes Voice of Sweden

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN — In December, officials at Sweden’s tourism board decided to hand over control of their @sweden Twitter account to a different Swedish citizen each week.

And this week the reigns of the account went to a woman truck driver named Hanna. Or, as her Twitter bio states, "I’m just your average lesbian truck-driver."

The project aims to change the image of Sweden — a country typically associated with tall blondes, meatballs and neutrality, reported Reuter’s. (We’ll add ‘cheap furniture’ and a certain Swedish Chef to that list, as well.)

"Gosh, I really enjoy being @sweden," writes Hanna. "They’ll have to grab the account out of my dying hands."

In between tweets about music and Signourney Weaver, Hanna is painting an interesting picture of life as a trucker, educating people about life on the road by taking the time to answer questions about hours of service or share pictures of her EOBR.

A few of Hanna’s Tweets, in no particular order:

  • "I drive a truck, from Sodertalje in Sweden, to Zwolle in the Netherlands. The best job ever!"
  • "We’re allowed to drive for 4,5hs, and then we need to have a break (45mins). The break can be divided in two (15+30mins)."
  • "Firstly, I have to make sure that the load is properly secured (after checking everything on the truck of course)."
  • "As I’ve told several others: I would never ever be tweeting in a car. I mostly don’t answer the phone in one."
  • "In a truck on the other hand, it’s way more steady, so looking away for a second doesn’t make you crash. I promise I’m being careful!"
  • "Yep, I’m one of the lucky ones, the ones who really enjoys going to work. I actually tried to switch jobs, but after just a week I returned."

You can follow Hanna this week on Twitter. Her handle is @sweden.
