Trucker Shows Cabinet Minister a Thing or Two About Trucking

Minister McIver gets a driver’s eye view of the industry.

CALGARY — Trimac driver and Road Knight Dennis Hokanson played tutor to the king yesterday.

Hokanson was tapped by the Alberta Motor Transport Association (AMTA) to tour Cowtown in a state-of-the-art KW pulling a pair of super-b’s while that province’s Minister of Transportation Ric McIver rode shotgun.

The event, orchestrated by the AMTA, provided the cabinet minister with a driver’s eye view of the industry as well as a lesson in how to share the road safely with trucks.

The trip began at Trimac’s Learning Centre and continued about an hour along Calgary’s busiest roadways.

NOTHING MACGYVOR’D ABOUT IT: On hand for the well-orchestrated event were, from left, AMTA Executive Director Don Wilson; Minister McIver; AMTA President Dan Duckering; Trimac CEO and President Ed Malysa; and Driver Hokanson.

A statement from the AMTA mentioned that the ride-along also provided Minister McIver with a “guided tour of a modern tractor-trailer which features the latest safety devices and environmental technology.” The KW was outfitted with satellite-tracking gear, anti-rollover devices and a variety of eco-enhancing technologies.

As a Road Knight, Hokanson is one of four truck drivers who travel the province to raise awareness of trucking and safety around trucks.
He has accumulated three million collision-free kilometres during a 15-year career.
