Truckers raise cash FORE! a good cause

MUSKOKA, Ont. — Not only is this year the 50th anniversary of the 15th largest for-hire carrier in Canada, Manitoulin Transport, it’s the third year in a row the company has sponsored a golf tournament to raise money for a charitable organization called Reach for the Rainbow.

The Manitoulin-Traction Golf Classic, held in early July at two courses — the Rocky Crest Golf club in MacTier and the Muskoka Bay Club in nearby Gravenhurst — raised close to $105,000 through entry fees, hole sponsorships and a silent auction.

In total, the Manitoulin Golf Classic has brought in more than $275 grand for the charity.

Reach for the Rainbow is a non-profit foundation that provides one-to-one trained support at summer camps for kids with physical and/or mental disabilities like autism, ADD, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida and other challenges.

Reach for the Rainbow was started almost 25 years ago by a mom named Donna Trella whose daughter Dove was dealing with a few mental challenges.

At first, the goal was to get Dove and kids like her active at Ontario Place and the program grew to allow children with challenges to attend summer camps.

At the height of its success, Reach for the Rainbow was sending over 1,000 children and young adults to more than 61 different camps in Ontario.
