Trucking Takes on ALS one Bucket of Ice at a Time

Challenge accepted: Meyers Transportation’s Collin Sood nominated Meyers Transportation President Jacquie Meyers to take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

TORONTO- Canadian and U.S. trucking representatives are doused in ice cold water, filmed, shown on social media and congratulated for completing the Ice Bucket Challenge. It’s all part of a charitable social media movement to raise awareness and money for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

ALS is a fatal disease affecting the central nervous system, often causing complete paralysis. And there is no cure, which is why trucking reps are accepting the challenge that has inspired some of the biggest figures in sports, business and Hollywood to raise money for ALS.

Toronto Transportation Club president Peter Collins took the challenge and in turn challenged former president, Trailcon Leasing’s John Foss.

In the challenge, people dump a bucket of ice water over their heads, post the video online and nominate three others to take the challenge within 24 hours. If the challenge is not accepted, people are supposed to donate at least $100 to the ALS Association, but often people and teams, such as Jacquie Meyers of Meyers Transport and even Today’s Trucking’s publisher Joe Glionna, do both.

The ALS Association said that so far, the campaign has raised close to $42 million.

Toronto Transportation Club President Peter Collins took the Ice Bucket Challenge and nominated Trailcon Leasing’s John Foss to do the same.

The Ice Bucket Challenge to strike out ALS has even swept the Great American Trucking Show in Dallas, where Baylor Trucking, an Indiana-based dry van and refrigerated truck fleet, is challenging 7-million trucking professionals to take the challenge.

“Our family has been in trucking for 70 years and we are thrilled so many of our trucking friends and colleagues are taking the challenge and helping fight ALS,” said Cari Baylor, Vice President of Baylor Trucking. “Our hope is to reach all corners of the industry and generate even more support for the #KeepTrucking4ALS cause. We want to do all we can to help raise awareness and find a cure for this disease.

The Baylor Trucking Ice Bucket Challenge takes place in the Dallas Convention Center parking lot on Friday, August 22 and Saturday, August 23 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Shepard Dunn, Chairman of the Truckload Carriers Association and CEO of Bestway Express accepted Baylor’s Ice Bucket Challenge.
