Trucking tonnage up 3.9%in 2003

OTTAWA, Ont. — Tonnage carried by Canada-based long-distance for-hire carriers amounted to 305 million metric tonnes of freight in 2003, up 3.9% from 2002, according to Statistics Canada figures just released.

Although domestic activities accounted for 72% of the total tonnage and 78% of the total shipments, transborder movements generated 48% of the total revenues earned and 52% of the total tonne-kilometres for these carriers.
