Trucking WSIB rates increase
TORONTO — After enjoying decreases the last two years, Ontario truckers will see a modest hike to their Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) premiums in 2009.
The WSIB Board of Directors has decided to keep the 2009 average premium rate at $2.26 — unchanged from 2007 and 2008. However, general trucking has been bumped up 1.6 percent, to $5.79/$100 of insurable salary from $5.70. Last year the rate was dropped by nearly 15 cents.
Couriers, though, will see another slight reduction — to $2.43 from $2.48, which is a 2 percent drop. Warehousing will also experience a 1.5 percent decrease from $2.68 to $2.64.
After winning reductions on behalf of the industry the last two years, the Ontario Trucking Association predicted that the WSIB would probably hike premiums in the coming years because of cost pressures.
The preliminary WSIB maximum insurable earnings ceiling for 2009 is $75,100. The final maximum insurable earnings ceiling will be set based on the April preliminary average weekly earnings aggregate, which will be published by Statistics Canada in July.
