TORONTO, Ont. — Need legal advice? Unsure about the legal implications of your CSA profile? Been involved in an accident and facing a lawsuit? Want to know your rights when dealing with a problematic shipper or driver?

Trucknews.com has welcomed aboard transportation attorney Doug Marcello as its latest blogger.

Marcello is a rare breed of attorney, in that he’s actually earned his CDL so he can better understand the challenges and equipment-related issues faced by drivers and motor carriers.

“Having a CDL allows me to analyze accidents and cases from the perspective of the driver and with regard to the equipment,” Marcello said. “It has been invaluable to have actually driven as it provides key insight as to what a driver has to do to perform a maneuver, what his range of vision is in doing so, and how the equipment responds as it goes through the maneuver.”

Based in Central Pennsylvania, Marcello has represented trucking companies in cases throughout the US, having been specially admitted in 35 states. He is a frequent speaker at industry events and driver safety meetings. He has also written numerous articles concerning issues confronting the industry and has produced several DVDs relating to accident response and aggressive defense of claims. He has earned the respect of the trucking industry due to his understanding of its intricacies from the carrier’s perspective.

“Our industry’s mission is, at is core, rather basic — move freight from point A to point B. That mission is constantly complicated by outside factors. Some of the most influential factors are the laws and regulations to which our drivers and companies are subject,” Marcello said. “The sad reality of today’s litigious society is that there are many who view our units as 18-wheel ATM machines. ‘Hit a truck, get a cheque.’ We strive to help companies protect themselves by preparing to respond to an accident, assisting and coordinating the response when the accident occurs, and defending the claim that arises.”

As a blogger to Trucknews.com, Marcello said he hopes to help carriers better understand the best ways to protect themselves against costly legal actions. He has already posted several entries and engaged readers.

“I hope to bring to the Trucknews.com blog practical information that is useful for trucking companies to protect against claims and navigate the laws and regulations that impact our industry. I will strive to provide practical information in an understandable manner,” Marcello said. You can find his blog on the home page of Trucknews.com.
