COUTTS, Alta. — Southern Alberta’s only 24-hour border crossing was closed yesterday after a suspicious package was found on a washroom on the U.S. side.

The building was evacuated and all traffic was stopped and re-routed to the Del Bonita crossing, 60 km west. Bomb specialists from Great Falls, Mont. were brought in, and they were able to determine the suspicious briefcase was not "hazardous or explosive nature."

The border crossing was closed between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. because of the scare.
