Turnpike tolls going up 25%

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission officials said tolls on the Turnpike will jump a whopping 25 percent in the New Year.

The new toll schedule will kick in on Jan. 4, 2009.

Starting in January 2010, tolls will go up incrementally by another 3 percent each year.

As a result of the toll increase projected annual gross toll revenue will increase from $619.2 million (2008 fiscal year end) to approximately $738.4 million (projected 2010 fiscal year end).

The previous increase in August 2004 was earmarked to rebuild and widen the original Turnpike.

The Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association responded to the announcement by calling for the repeal of the toll hike.

"Truckers move the vast majority of our nation’s goods and commerce," said Mike Joyce, OOIDA’s director of legislative affairs. "The last thing we need to do in the middle of a recession is weigh them down with significantly increased tolls."
