Unnamed donor to match money raised during charity golf event

GILFORD, Ont. — An unnamed donor “with ties to the Ontario trucking industry” will match monies raised during this month’s David Virgoe Memorial Golf Tournament dollar for dollar. All proceeds raised during the tournament – including the silent auction – will go to the Ontario Trucking Association Education Foundation which provides assistance to students with parents working in the trucking industry.

“This is really good news for the Foundation,” said Foundation chairman and president of J.D. Smith & Sons, Scott Smith. “The Foundation is a small organization with a very big heart, so any opportunity that we have to increase our funding is a welcome one. This means that the Foundation can assist more students with their university and college tuition fees and other related costs.”

The charity golf tournament serves as a tribute to the late David Virgoe, a heroic trucker who lost his life but saved many others by swerving to avoid oncoming traffic caused by street racers in June 2007.

The 3rd Annual David Virgoe Memorial Golf Tournament and Silent Auction will take place Aug. 29 at the Harbourview Golf and Country Club in Gilford, Ont. For more information or to register, contact Debbie Virgoe at 705-423-9223.
