U.S. Admin Looks At Total Driver Phone Ban

WASHINGTON — The American National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) boss is recommending states ban all behind-the-wheel cell-phone use, even the Bluetooth hands-free variety.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Board can’t make rules outright but it can weigh heavily in individual states’ lawmaking.

For instance, the U.S. Congress can provide grants to states if the states support specific federal-friendly programs. This week in fact, the Senate Commerce Committee is considering something called “Distracted Driving Grants” — essentially financial lures to convince states to prohibit texting and cellphone use among drivers.

The NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman made her recommendations about a total cell-phone ban Tuesday during an investigation into a fatal accident that took place in Missouri, a year ago.

In an interview after the meeting, Hersman said she’s determined to see changes made.

“The NTSB is taking a very strong stand on this issue because we’re seeking red flags when it comes to distraction, with both hand-held and hands-free,” Ms. Hersman said.
