U.S. Safety Board Wants Video Recorders on Trucks

In the recommendation on banning cell phones for all drivers, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) advised the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) that trucks be outfitted with video event recorders that capture data from the driver, the outside environment and the roadway.

The board also wants the FMCSA to require motor carriers to "review and use video event recorder information in conjunction with other performance data to verify that driver actions are in accordance with company and regulatory rules and procedures essential to safety."

The NTSB also restated their previous recommendation to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to examine the mandating of collision warning systems with adaptive cruise control and active braking.

The NTSB cannot make laws, only recommendations.
