Winter weight watching underway in Sask

REGINA — While some highways won’t be affected by the Winter Weight Season until Dec. 1, other regions of Saskatchewan will be observing new weights this weekend.

Winter Weights are effective Nov. 16 and continue until March 14 of the following year, however the period from Nov. 16 to Dec. 1 — and the period from the last day in February until March 14 — is subject to change depending on weather conditions.

The Winter Weight Season is subject to change depending on weather conditions and currently the new weight rules are set to begin on Nov. 16 along highways west of Saskatoon in the Kindersley region.

Winter weights are not based on a percentage of gross vehicle weight but rather on maximum gross weights on various axle configurations.

These winter weights apply to most provincial highways and municipal roads, however there are some provincial highways and roads where the winter weights do not apply.

Municipal roads are under the jurisdiction of the respective Rural Municipality and they have the authority to set limits at less than those on provincial highways.

For more information, refer to the Spring Road Restrictions and Winter Weights Map on the Saskatchewan Highways and Infrastructure website, or call the Highway Hotline at 1-888-335-7623.
