MEDICINE HAT, Alta. — Among the firms honored recently by International Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew is truck builder Wittke Waste Equipment.

The Alberta-based manufacturer of refuse haulers is now on the short list for the 2002 Canada Export Awards, which were established in 1983. The Awards recognize the achievements and success of Canadian exporting firms abroad.

“Exporters represent Canada’s success in global markets,” says Pettigrew. “The finalists, who are from every part of Canada, strongly contribute to the vitality of our economy. These firms alone generated export sales of almost $2.1 billion last year and provided more than 14,500 jobs.”

Since the program was set up, more than 210 exporters selected from 3,800 candidates have been honored.

The winners will be announced on Oct. 7 in Vancouver during a ceremony at the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters annual conference. One firm will be singled out to receive the prestigious Exporter of the Year Award.
