Worldwide honors for Cummins chief

COLUMBUS, Ind. — According to Barron’s magazine, Cummins has one of the top CEOs in the world at its helm.

Chairman and CEO Tim Solso was recently named as one of the top 30 CEOs in the world by Barron’s, a weekly magazine published by Dow Jones & Company. Solso was recognized for leading Cummins through "one of the most impressive revivals in industrial America."

Solso, who joined Cummins in 1971, became chairman and CEO in early 2000. He guided the company through a tumultuous period in the early part of the decade that included restructuring the company’s heavy-duty engine business and responding to a prolonged recession.

Cummins emerged from the recession in 2003 and went on to post record sales and profits from 2004-2008 before the global economic downturn began in late 2008.

Barron’s also praised Solso for leading the company in its focus on clean-diesel technology and international partnerships, particularly in China, India and Brazil where the company is a leader in key diesel engine markets. Approximately half of Cummins’ sales come from outside the U.S.

The magazine honors 30 CEOs each year. The selection is determined by how the company’s stocks perform, as well as interviews with investors, analysts and executives. This is Solso’s first appearance on the list.
