SASKATOON — Early morning, June 29, 2012.

Laurent Pennacchio and Olegas Milevskis, drivers for Yanke Group out of Saskatoon, SK., were coming around a sharp curve on Highway 17 in Ontario when they came upon a vehicle that had just crashed. A woman and two children were standing nearby.

The two drivers, after putting on their safety jackets and grabbing flashlights, approached the vehicle and saw a moose lying on the ground. It had collided with the car.

The father was still inside the vehicle, not moving. The mother was upset, and was on her cell trying to describe the location of the accident to a 911 operator. But it was Highway 17, and if you’re unfamiliar with the highway, that can be difficult.

Pennacchio provided their whereabouts so emergency personnel could find the scene quickly.

Then they asked the woman permission to take the two children out of the cold into the warmth of their truck. Pennacchio kept the kids company while Milevskis assisted with traffic control and waited with the woman. Both stayed on the scene until the O.P.P secured the area.

“I would like to thank your drivers [for] their assistance at the scene,” wrote an O.P.P constable to Yanke. “In this isolated section of highway ­— and certainly after dark — few people are willing to assist people in need. Cell phone service is spotty, which delays the response time of emergency crews, so any initial help is important.”

For their quick thinking and thoughtfulness, Pennacchio and Milevskis received a Highway Angel lapel pin, certificate, and patch from the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA), acknowledging that the men are both Highway Angels.
