PROTESTORS PUT BRAKES ON HWY. 401 TRAFFIC

CORNWALL, Ont. — Traffic slowed to a crawl along Canada’s busiest highway yesterday, as a group of anti-free-trade protestors led a convoy on Hwy. 401 from Gananoque to Cornwall.

The 20-vehicle caravan from Kingston slowed traffic to as little as 40 km/h for over three hours, frustrating thousands of drivers.

However, protest co-organizer Emily Vandermeulen says that truckers simultaneously sounded their horns in a show of support as the caravan left the highway in Cornwall. According to Vandermeulen, many truckers assisted the convoy in stalling traffic, by slowing down and blocking the lanes behind them.

"We showed we could slow trade by slowing the speed of traffic to 60 km/h from 120 km/h," says protest organizer Dave Silburn.
