Alberta cities feel funding crunch

GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alta. — The City of Grande Prairie will have to scale back its roadwork schedule, due to a drop in provincial transportation grants announced earlier this month.

“The 15 per cent provincial cutback affected the City of Grande Prairie to the tune of about $315,000 for basic capital grants,” says senior transportation engineer Darwin Juell. “It may mean downsizing a few programs or deferring or deleting one.”

A total of $290 million in deferrals is expected to result from the government’s $1.26 billion in cutbacks. Of that $290 million, about $280 million will be cut back from capital projects.

Calgary is also reeling from the financial cutbacks, and considering putting about $126 million projects on hold.
