Manley responsible for infrastructure
OTTAWA, Ont. — Jean Chretien’s cabinet shuffle yesterday was a major victory for John Manley, who was named Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Responsible for Infrastructure.
Manley appeared in Toronto yesterday before his swearing in, where he told reporters “There are many surprises in public life, and we’ve had a few over the last 24 hours.”
Some analysts are speculating that the announcements pave the way for Manley to become the next Prime Minsiter.
Chretien said Manley won big points for the way he handled the sensitive tasks of dealing with the U.S. post-Sept. 11.
Some elements of Manley’s new role in Cabinet are still being hashed out, but he claims to be eager to take on the new roles.
