Task force on U.S. relations and trade goes broke

OTTAWA, Ont. — While Canada and the U.S. are still at odds over several important trade issues, the Canadian task force on Canada-U.S. relations is in jeopardy due to lack of funding.

The task force, created to advice Prime Minister Jean Chretien on policy and trade issues with the U.S. says it has run out of money and was recently turned down when it approached the Liberals for more.

That means a trip to Washington and New York to meet with legislators has been scratched for now.

“The car’s ready to go and it’s loaded with workers, but you need some gas to get there,” says task force chairman, Joe Comuzzi. “Everybody gives you lots of support, but no money.”

There is a chance the panel will be disbanded altogether following a meeting in the Prime Minister’s office today. The group was put together May 29, about the time the latest round of softwood lumber duties were slapped against Canadian producers.
