N.Y. border security beefed up again
BUFFALO, N.Y. — The largest undefended border in the world may not look undefended much longer, especially in New York where a further 120 U.S. troopers will soon be deployed.
The deployment will take place in March and will add to the 100 troopers currently monitoring the Canada-N.Y. border. The announcement was made yesterday by Gov. George Pataki.
After the new deployment of troopers, veteran troopers will be dedicated to commercial vehicle enforcement at border crossings.
"With the increased presence, we will do more patrolling, not just at the border, but in border areas across western New York, making sure the people of New York are the safest they can possibly be," says Pataki.
About 712,000 commercial vehicles pass through the Peace Bridge border crossing annually while the Champlain border south of Montreal handles about 400,000 commercial vehicles per year.
