UNION BOSS AT PACCAR PLANT GOES ON HUNGER STRIKE
MONTREAL — Yvan Bourgois, the head of the union representing workers at Paccar’s truck plant in Ste-Thrse, Que. has gone on a hunger strike.
Bourgeois is denouncing layoffs the heavy-truck maker is imposing through sporadic closings of the plant. Wednesday he locked himself in his office with only a supply of water.
He is arguing that the company’s employees would be better off if it reduced production and imposed a one-time layoff, with those with less seniority–instead of all employees–being let go for short periods.
The plant is scheduled to close again Feb. 1 and 2.
