Spuds back in U.S. market
CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Prince Edward Island potatoes are slowly trickling back into the U.S. market after more than seven months of restrictions.
The U.S. imposed the ban after the discovery of potato wart in one corner of one field last October.
Ivan Noonan of the P.E.I. Potato Board explains no spuds have been rejected since the first trucks carrying potatoes were stopped at the Maine border by fastidious inspectors who said the potatoes were too dirty.
A deal reached last month allows shipment to the U.S. of table potatoes from 80 per cent of P.E.I. farms.
