BRIDGES STRENGTHENED TO WITHSTAND EARTHQUAKES
NANAIMO, B.C. – The recent earthquake that rattled Seattle has triggered alarm bells in B.C., but enhancements to two Trans-Canada Highway bridges will make them earthquake-proof by May.
The bridges, which span the Nanaimo River, will be made more robust by Surespan Construction Ltd. of Vancouver at a cost of $301,300.
“This is a timely project, given the recent earthquake,” says Nanaimo MLA Dale Lovick. “Both these bridges withstood the shaking without a problem, but this seismic upgrading will ensure they are better able to withstand more severe earthquakes.”
Truckers can expect some minor delays while work continues on the bridges over the next five weeks.
