Chretien to announce twinning of TCH today

ST. LEONARD, N.B. — Prime Minister Jean Chretien and New Brunswick Premier Bernard Lord meet today in St. Leonard to make it official the Trans-Canada will be twinned right across the province.

Chretien is expected to commit $100 million today, with another $110 million to come later. That represents half of the entire cost of the twinning.

About 140 kilometres are remaining to be twinned in New Brunswick. The announcement has been preceded by months of haggling between the feds and the province and some observers say it’s no coincidence the funding comes in the midst of a nasty leadership race between Chretien and Liberal Paul Martin.

The Trans-Canada should be fully twinned through the province by 2004.
